Safety Checklist
- Before you light a coal fire, clean out residual ash from previous fires and keep the depth of ash in the fireplace to 1 inch or less.
- Install a safety fireguard. Never leave a fire in the fireplace unattended. Make sure it is completely out before going to bed or leaving the house. If you leave the room while the fire is burning or the fireplace is still hot, take your small child with you. Always leave a fireguard in place.
- Instruct children about home fire safety and emphasise to them that children should not tend the fire.
- Separate the fire grate from any combustible flooring, and anything that might be flammable, with a hearth.
- Do not use damp wood in your fire as this may cause unwanted smoke residues to build up in the chimney.
- Keep a fire extinguisher on hand and remember to have the chimney swept at least once a year. Have a smoke alarm and carbon monoxide monitor fitted. Allow adequate ventilation to ensure sufficient updraft. https://www.fireservice.co.uk/safety/smoke-alarms/
