This column capital is carved equally on all four sides. It features a rebated column fitting. Characteristic of the later Roman column capital, the scrolls of this Corinthian capital protrude at an angle to the corners in a splayed effect. This makes it traditionally more useful to carry heavier weights of a pediment entablature. There is a lightness of feel to the architecture created in this way. The base for the insertion of the column top is recessed above the level of the base line. The base will take a 3-1/2 in diam. column, or 90mm.
